Teaching, writing

I earn my living teaching (English and German), but write and blog as well. For a long time I thought of these two things as entirely separate compartments of my life. Lately I have come to see that this split is meaningless. Teaching, like many lines of work, offers a wealth of material to write about - people, conflicts, gossip, trends, etc. I now wonder if I would feel so inspired to write if I did not have these day-to-day experiences to get my writing teeth into.
But teaching is also changing. Bookworm though I am myself, I use a lot of online materials such as websites, Youtube and various blogs, including some I write for, in my lessons. Teenagers often have a strong resistance to reading well-written material on the printed page, but will read reams online without batting an eyelid.
Recently, a teacher from Jordan has said that she will be using my blog in her lessons. I was delighted. This is an exciting time for wordsmiths in all walks of life. |
